Things to Do When You Need a Break From Streaming

By James Brooke

Streaming our favourite TV shows and films is easier than ever. With a tap on the remote control, we can instantly access what we want, when we want it, burning through 20-episode seasons in days rather than over the course of weekly instalments released over several months.

But the appeal can wear off. Shows can feel repetitive when you spend too much time watching them. If you’re ready to step away from the screen, here are some ideas to divert your attention.

Read something new

Have you got a big TBR pile? If you’ve had books stacking up or you’ve been meaning to get around to finishing that holiday read you started in the summer, now is the perfect time. You might also want to pick up a print magazine or check out that blog post that you bookmarked.

Reading gives you the chance to rest your eyes from harsh backlights while focusing on the words in front of you. Grab a brew, settle into a comfortable armchair and let your imagination soar.

Get outside

Being out in nature can help to boost your mood. Taking a short walk gives you a break from the screen while helping your body and mind. The steady rhythmic movement stimulates circulation, while natural surroundings prompt your body to lower cortisol levels.

Head out through your local park or along a quiet trail for 20 minutes during late afternoon daylight. This helps avoid the high heat of the sun and gives you the chance to enjoy some gentle exercise while exploring green spaces that are close by.

Try a creative hobby

Whether you love to draw or you’ve always wanted to master some culinary creations, this is the ideal opportunity to pick up a pen or a pan.

Pursuing creative activities can be both relaxing and rewarding. Take the time to think about the hobbies that inspire you and go with it. Even if you simply start sketching the view from your living room window or play around with an old camera, you could find that you tap into your natural skills and develop a passion for something new.

Catch up with friends

It’s so easy to socialise online. But why not have a proper chat with someone you love?

A phone call or coffee meet-up can be just what you need to take you away from hitting play on the next episode. Invite your friends to a local café for an hour of face-to-face conversation or call your old uni friend who lives across the map. Sharing recent stories directly strengthens your friendship and leaves you feeling genuinely energised.

Try gaming

Some people enjoy gaming experiences, from quick puzzle apps to online spins. These interactive titles provide an alternative to spending hours on the sofa as you can dip in and play rather than committing to hours.

Take the time to explore the types you might enjoy. You might find that you want to tackle immersive worlds or simple word games.

Tackle a puzzle

Crosswords and brain teasers are great for keeping your mind active. Pick up a print newspaper or a dedicated puzzle book to work through intricate grid challenges and logic patterns. Working through these clever clues sharpens your cognitive speed through satisfying problem-solving.
